How do you calculate a Net Promoter Score? Take the percentage of promoters and subtract the percentage of detractors. Here's how it works, with a free calculator.

Everyone who answers the zero to ten question lands in one of three groups. Nine or ten are promoters, seven or eight are passives, and zero to six are detractors.

Say 200 people answer: 120 promoters, 50 passives and 30 detractors. That's 60 percent promoters minus 15 percent detractors, so the score is plus 45. Passives count in the total, but not in the subtraction.

Underneath is the range where the true score probably sits. If this quarter's range overlaps heavily with last quarter's, the change may just be noise.

Got the raw answers in a spreadsheet? Paste the column straight in. In SurveyRock, the NPS question works out the score and the three groups for you. This is SurveyRock — start free at surveyrock.com.
