AI follow-up questions

Get the reason behind a one-word answer, while the respondent is still there

When someone answers "fine" or "the price", SurveyRock asks one short follow-up about what they wrote, right under the question. You get the reason you'd have chased by email, in the same response.

New accounts start with a 14-day trial of Growth, AI follow-up questions included.

Stop guessing what "fine" meant

Open-text questions are where the useful answers are, and also where people type one word and move on. "Fine." "Support." "The price." By the time you read it, the respondent is gone, and the only way to find out more is another email they won't answer. SurveyRock asks while they're still on the page: one short follow-up, written about their own answer, and only when the answer was too short to act on.

Mid-survey AI probes

One follow-up, about what they actually said

When an answer to an open-text question is shorter than your minimum word count, the AI writes one follow-up about that answer and shows it right under the question. Each question probes a respondent at most once, and longer answers are left alone.

Word-count trigger

You decide what counts as too short

It's on for new open-text questions; switch it off for any question where you don't want it, and set the minimum word count, from 1 to 50 (5 to start). Answers below it get a follow-up. Other question types are never probed.

Skippable by design

Respondents stay in control

The follow-up sits in a box labelled "Follow-up question" with a Continue button. Respondents can answer it or leave it blank and carry on. If the AI can't produce a follow-up, the survey simply moves on.

Follow-up answers in your results

The reason sits next to the answer

In the Response Explorer, each follow-up and its answer appear under the original answer. CSV, Excel and Word exports add two columns for each question that asked a follow-up: the follow-up asked and the answer given.

Privacy controls

Emails, phone numbers and IPs stay out of the prompt

Email addresses, phone numbers and IP addresses are removed from the answer before it's sent to the AI provider, and the answer isn't written to our logs. A workspace admin can turn AI off for the whole workspace, and that stops follow-ups too.

How it works

From "fine" to a reason, in one extra step

  1. 1

    Check the question

Mid-survey probe is under AI Features in an open-text question's settings. It's on for new questions; switch it off where you don't want it.

  2. 2

    Set the bar

Choose the minimum word count. Answers shorter than that get a follow-up.

  3. 3

    Respondents answer, or skip

A short answer gets one follow-up under the question. They reply or press Continue.

  4. 4

    Read both together

The follow-up and its answer appear under the original in the Response Explorer and in your exports.

Questions

How AI works at SurveyRock: AI at SurveyRock

Which questions can ask a follow-up?

Open-text questions. The trigger is the length of the answer, not a score or its sentiment: a rating question doesn't ask a follow-up on its own. To find out why someone gave a low score, follow the rating with an open-text "why" question and turn the probe on there.

Do respondents know the follow-up is written by AI?

The box is labelled "Follow-up question". It isn't labelled as AI-written, so if that matters for your audience, say so in your survey's introduction.

What is sent to the AI provider?

The question and the respondent's answer to it, with email addresses, phone numbers and IP addresses removed first. Nothing else from the response. The providers are on our sub-processor list.

Are follow-up answers included in themes and sentiment?

No. Follow-up answers appear in the Response Explorer and in CSV, Excel and Word exports, but Text Analysis themes and sentiment read the original answers only. They're also not in SPSS exports, PDF reports or the API.

Does it work on multi-language surveys?

The follow-up box's labels follow the survey's language, in all 21 of SurveyRock's languages. The follow-up itself is written from the question as it's stored in the survey's main language, so on a translated survey it may not come back in the respondent's language. It works best on surveys in one language.

Which plans include it?

Growth, Pro and Enterprise. New accounts start with a 14-day trial of Growth.
