Generate a survey with AI

Instead of building a survey question by question, you can describe what you want in plain language and let AI draft it — questions, answer choices, and, where relevant, logic. You review the draft, keep what works, and either edit it directly or ask for changes and regenerate.

Every AI-generated question is a normal, fully editable question once it lands in the builder. Nothing is locked.

AI survey generation is available on the Solo plan and above.

Using it

1. From Create Survey, choose the AI Assisted option.
2. Describe what you want in plain language — the audience, the purpose, and roughly how many questions or which topics to cover. You can also start from one of the example prompts and adjust it.
3. Click Generate Survey. The AI drafts a set of questions and answer choices, and logic where your prompt implies it.
4. Review the draft. If it is close but not quite right, type a follow-up instruction in the same box — for example, “make the open-text questions optional” — and click Update Survey. The AI treats your existing draft as context and revises it rather than starting over.
5. If the result is not useful at all, click Try Again to regenerate from the same prompt, or write a more specific prompt.
6. Once you are happy with it, keep editing normally in the builder: reorder questions, adjust wording, add logic, change question types.

Turning an existing questionnaire into a survey

If the questions already exist in a document, convert them instead of retyping them.

1. From Create Survey, choose AI Assisted. Below the prompt box is a card called Already have a survey? Convert it.
2. Paste the questionnaire into the box, or choose Upload a .docx, .pdf or .txt file.
3. Click Convert to draft. SurveyRock turns the text into a draft survey and opens it for review.
4. Edit anything you want to change, then save.

The draft includes suggested pages, required flags and optional help text, all editable on the review screen. Drafts written from a prompt get the same suggestions. They follow your text and are not guaranteed, so check them.

What it converts. Questions and answer choices. It does not carry over logic: skip rules in the original are dropped. For logic, tick Also draft skip logic for this survey before you save. That is a separate AI pass that takes longer, uses additional AI credits, and gives you suggested rules to review.

Limits.

• Up to 30,000 characters of text. The box stops you at the limit.
• Files up to 15 MB, and the first 200 pages of a PDF.
• It writes text, multiple choice, rating, yes/no, email, date, slider, matrix, NPS, ranking and file upload questions. It never makes a dropdown.
• Rating scale labels, scale lengths and slider ranges are not carried over. Rating questions come in with default settings, so check each one.
• Exact wording and order are requested, not guaranteed. Compare the draft with your original.
• It saves into a blank survey, up to 100 questions.
• Each conversion uses AI credits from your plan’s allowance. Workspaces in PHI mode cannot use AI drafting.

Scanned documents. SurveyRock reads the text in a file. A scanned PDF or an image has no text to read, so use a file with selectable text, or paste the questions.

Setting the tone for every generation

Your workspace has an AI customization profile — tone, industry, custom instructions, language, and creativity level — that applies to every generation, so you do not have to repeat the same instructions in each prompt.

It lives in Workspace Settings → AI Customization. Two things worth knowing:

• It is a workspace-wide setting, not a personal preference. Changing it affects generations for everyone in that workspace.
• Only workspace owners and admins can see or change it. If you cannot find it, that is why.

Example

A product manager starting a beta-feedback survey types:

A short beta feedback survey for a project-management app. Ask what they tried, what worked, what didn’t, and whether they’d recommend it to a colleague, with an NPS question at the end.

They click Generate Survey and get a five-question draft, then decide the “what didn’t work” question should be optional. Rather than editing by hand, they type “make the open-text questions optional” and click Update Survey — the AI keeps the rest of the draft and applies just that change.

Troubleshooting

Generate Survey fails or produces nothing. Check your AI credit balance. Each generation draws on your plan’s monthly allowance, and generation stops once that allowance is used up for the billing period.

The draft doesn’t match what I asked for. Be specific about audience, purpose, and roughly how many questions you want — a vague prompt produces a generic survey. Then use Update Survey with a follow-up instruction rather than discarding the draft; refining usually gets there faster than a fresh prompt.

The tone or terminology feels wrong for my industry. Set the AI customization profile once, in Workspace Settings, rather than restating it in every prompt.

AI-drafted logic doesn’t behave as expected. Treat AI-generated skip or display logic as a first draft, exactly as you would logic you built by hand, and check it in the logic simulator before publishing.

I don’t see the AI option at all. AI survey generation is not included on the Free plan.
