Slack
Connect your Slack workspace to SurveyRock once. After that, a workflow can post a message to a channel, and a workspace can have every new Action assignment posted to one shared channel. Slack connects from a workflow step, so it needs a plan with workflows: Team and up.
This page is about posting to Slack from SurveyRock. To share a survey link in Slack without connecting anything, see Sharing a survey in Slack or Microsoft Teams.
Connect Slack
Section titled “Connect Slack”You need to be an owner or admin of the SurveyRock workspace. You also need to be allowed to add apps in your Slack workspace; if your Slack admin restricts apps, ask them to approve SurveyRock.
- In SurveyRock, open a workflow and add an Action step. Choose Send Slack Message.
- In the step’s panel, click Connect Slack.
- Slack asks which of your workspaces to use and what SurveyRock can do. Click Allow.
- You come back to the workflow, and the step shows Connected to and the name of your Slack workspace.
SurveyRock asks Slack for permission to post messages as SurveyRock, to post in public channels it has not joined, to see the names of public channels and of private channels it has been added to, and to see the people in your Slack workspace. We store the connection encrypted and never show it.
A SurveyRock workspace has one Slack connection. Connecting a different Slack workspace replaces the first.
Post to a channel from a workflow
Section titled “Post to a channel from a workflow”In the Send Slack Message step, pick the channel and write the message. The message takes merge tags from the tag button, so it can carry details from the response that started the workflow: for example, an NPS score and the comment that came with it. A preview shows how it will look in Slack.
Send Test posts a test message to the channel straight away, so you can check the channel and the wording before you publish.
Anyone who can read the channel can read the message. Put in only what that channel’s members should see.
Private channels
Section titled “Private channels”Slack lets an app post to a public channel without joining it. For a private channel, add SurveyRock to the channel first: in Slack, open the channel and type /invite @SurveyRock.
Testing a Slack step
Section titled “Testing a Slack step”Test on a workflow has two modes. Simulate, the default, runs every step without sending anything: a Slack step shows the message it would post and posts nothing. Live runs the workflow once for real with your test payload, so a Slack step posts to the channel, with a [TEST] line at the top so the channel knows it was a test. Before a Live run starts, SurveyRock lists everything it will send, and runs only once you confirm. A published, enabled workflow always posts.
Post new Action assignments to a channel
Section titled “Post new Action assignments to a channel”When an Action is assigned to someone, SurveyRock can post a message to a shared Slack channel. It names who assigned the Action and who now owns it, shows the Action’s title, and links to it.
- Connect Slack as above. The connection is shared: you do not connect twice.
- On the Actions page, click Notifications.
- Enter the channel’s name or ID, tick Post to this channel when an action is assigned, and click Save.
This posts to one shared channel for the workspace. It does not send direct messages to individual people. The person an Action is assigned to still gets their usual notification in SurveyRock and by email. More on assigning and notifications: Turn results into actions.
If a message does not arrive
Section titled “If a message does not arrive”- Not connected. If the step says Slack is not connected, click Connect Slack again.
- Slack ended the connection. If someone removed SurveyRock from your Slack workspace, Slack steps fail until an owner or admin clicks Reconnect in the step’s panel.
- A private channel. SurveyRock has to be in the channel. See Private channels.
- A wrong channel name. Pick the channel from the list in the step, or copy its ID from Slack.
Reconnect or disconnect
Section titled “Reconnect or disconnect”In the Send Slack Message step’s panel, owners and admins see Reconnect and Disconnect next to the connected workspace name. Disconnect removes SurveyRock’s connection. Workflow steps that post to Slack, and the Action assignment post, stop until you connect again.
To remove SurveyRock from Slack itself, open Manage apps in Slack and remove it there.
