What Is Open-Ended Question?
A question that lets respondents answer in their own words, with no predefined list of choices to pick from.
An open-ended question — “What’s the main reason for your score?”, “What would make this product better for you?” — gives respondents a blank text field instead of a fixed list. That freedom is the point: open-ended answers surface reasons, language, and edge cases a closed-ended list would never have anticipated.
The tradeoff has historically been analysis cost: reading hundreds or thousands of free-text answers by hand doesn’t scale, which is why many teams either skip open-ended questions or only sample-read a fraction of the responses. Response rates also tend to run lower on open-ended questions than closed-ended ones, since typing takes more effort than clicking.
The analysis problem is the part that’s changed most in the last few years — AI-based theme detection can now read every response, not a sample, and group them into surfaced themes in the time it used to take to read a handful by hand.
