What Is Double-Barreled Question?
A single question that actually asks about two different things at once, forcing respondents to give one answer that can't honestly reflect both.
“Was the product easy to use and affordable?” looks like one question but is really two. A respondent who found the product easy to use but expensive has no honest way to answer — agree, and you can’t tell which half they meant; disagree, and you’ve lost the same information.
The word “and” is the most common tell, but double-barreled questions can also hide in a single noun phrase that bundles two concepts (“Was our support fast and helpful?”). The result is data that looks clean but can’t actually be interpreted with confidence.
The fix is mechanical: split the question into two. “Was the product easy to use?” and “Was the product affordable?” as separate items give you two clean, analyzable answers instead of one ambiguous one.
